About G. Scott Mitchell, CPA, MBA
Nonprofit Leadership Coach & CFO Advisor
With deep nonprofit leadership and financial expertise, I help faith-based leaders align mission, strategy, and financial systems—so they can lead with clarity and confidence - and make mission-driven decisions that last.
Called to Serve Nonprofit Leaders
Leaders should never have to sacrifice their mission because of unclear systems, financial complexity, or leadership isolation. Yet too often, that’s the reality for faith-based executives and nonprofit leaders carrying the full weight of their calling.
With more than 35 years of nonprofit leadership and financial experience — from my earliest church roles to the mission field and later as CFO and Vice President of international ministries — I learned this truth: clarity and alignment are what free leaders to focus on their purpose.
That conviction shapes how I serve — creating space for leaders to pause, see clearly, and take courageous next steps.
I come alongside leaders for a season to help them see what’s really happening beneath the surface — in their leadership, organization, or mission. My role is to bring perspective, clarity, and courage so they can move forward with confidence in their calling and a practical plan to match.
Over the years, I’ve developed a gift for recognizing patterns others may not see — sensing when a vision is drifting off course or when an opportunity is emerging. Whether in a coaching session or a strategic planning meeting, that insight helps leaders reconnect their purpose with their next step.
My approach blends discernment with design: listening deeply, asking catalytic questions, and helping leaders architect systems that support what God is building through them. The outcome is simple but significant — renewed confidence, clear direction, and a structure that turns inspiration into action.
I believe every season of leadership deserves a trusted companion who can listen for what God is doing and help translate it into sustainable movement. That’s the space where I serve best — walking shoulder-to-shoulder with leaders until clarity becomes reality.
Scott’s unique blend of experience in the nonprofit sector brought wisdom, knowledge and confidence to all our financial matters. DK, Ministry Leader
My Journey in Nonprofit Leadership
Executive Profile
For nearly four decades, I’ve helped faith-based organizations bridge the gap between calling and capacity—strengthening the systems that sustain their mission.
I began in 1986 as a 20-year-old volunteer helping my church computerize its accounting and mailing systems. Since then, I’ve served ministries ranging from small local churches and municipalities to international organizations with budgets exceeding $30 million.
My leadership has included roles as Finance Director and CFO, overseeing multi-entity financial structures, guiding board reporting and strategy, and implementing systems that drive organizational clarity and sustainability.
Today, as Founder of Nonprofit Breakthrough LLC, I partner with CxOs, boards, and financial teams of faith-based nonprofits to align mission, strategy, and financial systems for long-term impact—building the clarity and confidence leaders need to steward their calling well.
-
I began as Finance Director (2005–2007) before promotion to CFO (2007–2009) for an international ministry with a $20–30M budget. During this time, I earned my CPA license (2008), oversaw finance for six entities, implemented Microsoft Dynamics, introduced organization-wide budgeting tools, and worked with legal and tax advisors to restructure the nonprofit’s legal framework. I also served as Board Secretary and Treasurer, presenting regularly to the board.
-
I served at a boutique CPA firm specializing in nonprofit clients, gaining valuable experience in nonprofit tax preparation, audit software, and client communication. During this time, I also supported the firm’s move to a new office and assisted with internal process coordination. Though the role wasn’t a long-term fit, it refined my technical proficiency in nonprofit tax and compliance—skills I continue to leverage when advising clients today.
-
I provided finance and administrative leadership for GSDM, a global ministry with annual budgets ranging from $5–10 million. My responsibilities included oversight of financial systems, board reporting, and organizational strategy. I also served as Board Secretary and a member of the Strategic Leadership Team.
(This was a staff leadership role, not a seat on the board of directors.) -
I founded Nonprofit Breakthrough LLC to serve mission-driven leaders navigating growth, complexity, or transition. Through its coaching division—Breakthrough Coaching—I partner with executive teams, CFOs, and boards to strengthen alignment between purpose, people, and process.
My work blends nonprofit financial strategy with executive coaching, helping organizations make confident, mission-centered decisions and build systems that sustain long-term health and impact.
-
I served in a variety of ministry and leadership roles, including administrative pastor, field accountant, instructor, and international director for a small missions organization. These roles took me from home-office administration to on-the-ground missionary service, overseeing programs and finances in diverse cultural contexts.
This season shaped a global perspective on leadership and a deep understanding of how faith, culture, and systems interact to support effective ministry.
-
Early in my career, I developed and implemented financial systems for towns, churches, and schools, and introduced fund accounting to a small church denomination. My work ranged from bookkeeping and secretarial roles in a local church to serving as a municipal accountant helping streamline public finance operations.
During this time, I earned a BS in Accounting with a Computer Science minor (Clemson University) and an MBA specializing in Missions and Nonprofit Management (Regent University).
These early experiences established the technical and ministry foundation that continues to shape my work with faith-based organizations today.
Career Highlights
The path that shaped this conviction spans four decades of nonprofit leadership — each season deepening my belief that healthy systems and faithful stewardship create space for mission to thrive.
Next Step
Your mission deserves clarity and alignment at every level — from financial systems to leadership strategy. Let’s talk about how I can help your organization move forward with confidence.
Beyond the Résumé
Early in my career, I learned that technical expertise alone wasn’t enough. While financial systems and strategy matter, it was the soft skills — personal connection, trust, and relationship — that opened the door for true partnership.
Those relationships allowed me into strategic spaces where others, who took a rigid “CF-NO” approach, were shut out.
Because of that foundation, I’ve been able to guide tough conversations with boards and executives, not as an outsider imposing rules, but as a trusted partner committed to helping leaders find clarity, alignment, and sustainable solutions.
The same qualities that shape my professional work — curiosity, steadiness, and a people-first approach — also define who I am outside of the office. Whether I’m on the trail, serving in my church, or spending time with my family, I carry the same conviction: leadership is about more than numbers. It’s about people, purpose, and presence.
